5 Gardening Safety Tips For Seniors

Many seniors love to garden and watch their hard work spring up into fruitful (pun intended!) and full-grown manifestations of those tiny seeds they started planting weeks or months before.
Because of the love many seniors have for gardening, we at A-1 Home Care look to provide practical gardening safety tips to help them avoid injuring themselves as they enjoy such a neat activity.
Take a look below at some of the helpful gardening safety tips our in-home care providers look to provide seniors of all ages who have a big green thumb:
  1. Check your whole yard for potential safety hazards. Have a friend or family member walk through your yard with you to check for any unyielding roots, rocky ground, loose areas of dirt, or any other potential falling hazards in your garden.
     2.   Correct those things you happen to find that could be hazardous to you as you're gardening. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and gloves for enhanced safety against any branch or sticker that might scratch you as you're clearing out an area with potential hazards. You should also wear goggles to help protect your eyes as you clean out your garden.
     3.   Have your cell phone with you when you're gardening. This allows you to call for help immediately in the case of a bad fall.
     4.    Use a walking stick when you're near uneven ground, as this will give you additional support that could be the difference between a nasty fall and catching your balance just in time. You can also use a cane or a ski pole instead.
     5.    Don't climb up and down ladders, or get on top of overturned buckets or anything else that isn't already firmly rooted in the ground and meant for support. The risk-- falling down from the elevated position-- is far greater than the reward!
